The Kings Bay Marine Laboratory in Ny-Ålesund was officially opened June 1st 2005, and is the northernmost laboratory of its kind in the world. It is an experimental laboratory for research in marine ecology, physiology, biochemistry, as well as some physical sciences like oceanography, marine geology and ice physics.

The laboratory is constructed with smaller rooms and laboratories equipped for different purposes. It is suitable for a range of experimental research with system-control of experimental variables like room and water temperature. It is also appropriate for experiments under ambient conditions such as seawater and light.

The Kings Bay Marine Laboratory is well connected to the infrastructure and services offered by Kings Bay AS. The laboratory is owned and operated by Kings Bay AS, and all use of the laboratory is under Kings Bay AS' administration and supervision. Space in the laboratory is sublet on commercial basis.
