During summer and autumn 2013 Kings Bay AS will restore the old Telegraph building in Ny-Ålesund. The project is supported by Telenor and Svalbard environmental protection fund. We are interested in pictures of the telegraph from the time it was in operation. If you have any pictures of the building, we will be grateful if you could share them with us. Dark fishing – Winter boating for AWIPEV project KOP 117 “Overwintering of the thecosome pteropods Limacina helicina and Limacina retroversa: sensitivities to ocean acidification and warming” in Kongsfjord PI’s: Prof. Dr. Ulf Riebesell, Dr. Silke Lischka (GEOMAR, Kiel, Germany) 
Photo: AWIPEW Ocean acidification is a decrease of the pH, accompanied by a decrease in carbonate ion concentration in the oceans caused by anthropogenic CO2 emissions. Arctic thecosome pteropods, with their shell made of aragonite, are expected to be among the first organisms threatened by ocean acidification (OA). These effects will be most pronounced during the Arctic winter. |

2013 has started great in Ny-Ålesund, with good conditions for skiing and snowmobiling. We can already see that the light is returning. In the midle of the day the light in south makes the sky clear blue and again we can see the contours of the mountains. On the south side of the Brøgger peninsula the sky is red in south in the middle of the day.
